Join the Niagara Frontier Reading Council for our Spring 2022-2023 Professional Book Discussion Group!
Literature for children and teens has long been the most frequently banned category of books in the US, and recent events across America have only intensified the trend.
The Niagara Frontier Reading Council has chosen YOU CAN'T SAY THAT!: Writers for Young People Talk about Censorship, Free Expression, and the Stories They Have to Tell for its Spring Professional Book Discussion…
AND we are delighted to announce that renowned historian, author, and international lecturer Leonard S. Marcus will join our virtual Spring 2023 Professional Book Discussion Group to discuss this important topic.
What happens when freedom of expression comes under threat? In his illustrated talk, Mr. Marcus will offer an eye-opening look and much needed perspective on book censorship past and present—its patterns and consequences, and what can be done to protect young people's right to read. An opportunity for questions and answers will follow.

Professional Book Discussion Group focuses on SEL in Year 9
It has been a pleasure working with Dr. Ashlee Campbell, co-president of the Niagara Frontier Reading Council, over the summer coordinating the Professional Book Discussion Group study with the “Superpower of Neuroscience” Fall Event to explore social-emotional learning in-depth.
To that end, an extensive list of children’s books and adult resources related to SEL was compiled and will be distributed to participants attending the Fall Event program. In addition, Kim Krug, owner of Monkey See, Monkey Do arranged for a dedicated NFRC link on Bookshop where books featured on this list can be purchased by interested NFRC members at a discount.
We will use this SEL resource to begin our Professional Book Discussion Group for Year 9 on October 27th from 6:30-8:30 (virtual) with a discussion of outstanding children’s books with SEL-related themes. Prepare in advance for the meeting by familiarizing yourself with books on the list and choosing those you’d like to highlight in our discussion. Two CTLE credits will be given. Note: Members do not have to attend the Fall Event to participate in the PBDG discussion; however, pre-registration is necessary in order to receive the secure link. Find more details and sign-up here: https://www.thenfrc.org/professional-book-discussion-group.html#/. As a perk of membership, the NFRC Professional Book Discussion Group is open to members of any NYSRA chapter.
In the spring semester the PBDG plans to read and discuss a professional resource on the topic of SEL. The committee met over the summer and chose the following title:
All Learning Is Social and Emotional: Helping Students Develop Essential Skills for the Classroom and Beyond by Nancy Frey and Doug Fisher.
Here is a link to the book on Amazon.

A Note about this Year's Format ~ Zoom & Purchase Your Own Copy
Dear NFRC Members,
As we near membership renewal time, I wanted to share with you our exciting plans for Year 8 of the Professional Book Discussion Group, a perk of membership in the NFRC.
This year we plan to begin with our “face-to-face” meetings taking place via Zoom. Our first meeting will be held on
October 24th from 9am-11am. We will be discussing WE GOT THIS: EQUITY, ACCESS, AND THE QUEST TO BE WHO OUR STUDENTS NEED US TO BE by Cornelius Minor.
Members interested in participating in the book discussion are asked to acquire their own copy of the book this year. Disseminating books as we have done in the past is not feasible. We encourage shopping local and offer these options:
The author of the book, Cornelius Minor, will be conducting a webinar sponsored by NYSRA on November 13th at 7:30 pm. It is FREE TO MEMBERS. (Space is limited!). As a member of NFRC, you are also a member of NYSRA. Non-members pay $40 to attend the webinar. Once you renew your NFRC membership, sign up soon for the webinar on the NYSRA website to ensure a spot.
Following the webinar, the PBDG will meet again via Zoom to discuss what we learned from listening to Cornelius/reading his book, and how we might incorporate these insights into our classroom practice. This Zoom meeting will be led by Patty Oliphant and will take place on November 24th from 9am-11am. An email regarding details of the Zoom meeting will be sent to members.
In the spring semester, we plan to resume our online component of the PBDG with reading and discussion of pertinent, timely professional articles. We will provide more details as spring approaches. At that time we may also add additional face-to-face (or Zoom) meetings. Let us know your thoughts and preferences.
All participants at meetings, the webinar, and the online component are eligible to receive CTLE credit.
If you have suggestions, comments, or questions, please contact me at [email protected].
