The NFRC Supports Habitat for Humanity
The NFRC has long partnered with Habitat for Humanity as part of its Outreach Initiatives in the local community. Over the years, dozens of children’s and young adult books have been donated by the NFRC to help celebrate home dedications, a joyous event when families are welcomed to their new residences.
About Habitat for Humanity Buffalo
Habitat for Humanity Buffalo is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit charitable organization seeking to alleviate the shortage of quality affordable housing in Buffalo, New York. For many families in Buffalo, having a place to call home is impossible.
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money, land, and materials, Habitat Buffalo builds or rehabilitates simple, decent houses. Families are selected based on their level of need, willingness to work, acceptance of responsibilities and ability to repay mortgage. Families must complete 500 hours of sweat equity, which includes homeowner education classes. Qualified families purchase Habitat homes with a zero-interest mortgage, enabling them to own their home.
Habitat Buffalo is primarily financed by private donations from individuals, community groups, corporations, charities, foundations, schools, and religious organizations. The use of government funds for new construction or renovation or repair of existing houses, for acquisition of land or houses in need of rehabilitation, or for streets, utilities, and administrative expenses, are sometimes utilized as long as the funds have no strings attached that would violate Habitat Buffalo’s principles.

Habitat for Humanity Update
NFRC continues to partner with Habitat for Humanity to provide books and bookcases to families receiving a Habitat for Humanity house. This is a wonderful partnership that allows NFRC to give new books and a new bookcase to each family as they move into their new home. Everyone at NFRC loves books and we want all children to have access to books, not only at school and the library, but at their home.
In 2020-2021, NFRC donated books, bookcases, and book baskets to 11 families (22 children total). So far this year, NFRC has donated books and a bookcase for one family in August 2021. There are typically one to two house dedications each month. This year, both the bookcases and many books have been graciously donated to NFRC from two NFRC board members. Thank you to Susan Busch for serving as the past NFRC liaison. Ashlee Campbell will serve in this role for the 2021-2022 year.

Habitat for Humanity Dedication - February 24th
Outreach at Habitat
NFRC continues to support Habitat for Humanity by providing books and bookcases at each house dedication where children will be living. Some of you may notice that the Family Liaison listed on the program is Sue Jacobs, a past president of NFRC! So nice to see her occasionally. I always knew that the family worked with the liaison to take classes on home maintenance, finance, etc. and must complete 500 hours of sweat equity, half on their own home and half on other Habitat projects. But I learned something new at this dedication: the children of the family are expected to do well in school and their report cards figure into the family’s sweat equity hours! Habitat really works to ensure the responsibility of the entire family! Thanks to all of you for supporting our Outreach Projects of NFRC! -Sue Busch

Habitat for Humanity Dedication - November 9th
Habitat for Humanity Bookcases
This year, the NFRC is adding another piece to our support of home literacy: we are donating bookcases along with a basket of books appropriate for the children occupying each home! And NFRC members are invited to directly impact this local Outreach initiative!
Each bookcase costs $25.00. We are anticipating several dedication ceremonies during the school year. If you are interested in donating funds for a bookcase, please make a check payable to NFRC for $25.00 and designate “Habitat for Humanity” in the memo line. Donate at any NFRC event, or mail your check to Sue Busch, 144 Cleveland Drive, Kenmore, NY 14223. You can also visit our NFRC Donations page HERE. We’ll take care of picking up the bookcases and delivering them with the baskets of books to the Habitat for Humanity families! A very special thank you goes out to our donors! |
