What is your favorite teaching moment?
My favorite teaching moments are the ones that empower students to believe in themselves and take ownership of their education. The feeling of empowerment they gain is priceless. I also enjoy the lessons that they teach me, more than priceless ;)
Why did you become a teacher?
For as long as I can remember, I was always drawn to children and their sense of curiosity and wonder. When it came to selecting a college degree interest, it seemed like education was the right path for my journey to begin. I knew I loved working with children and their families. I also had a goal of being a stay at home mom and knew that a career in education would help prepare me for that role. Twenty-five years later, I am still working in education and loving it. I started my career in elementary education and am currently working in higher education sharing my experiences with students who wish to become elementary and secondary teachers.
What is your role with the NFRC?
I have been involved with the NFRC for about 8 or 9 years now. My colleague and friend, Dr. Cathleen March encouraged me to join and become a Board Member. I took advantage of the opportunity. I loved the fact that the NFRC participated in so many outreach programs as well as planned professional development opportunities for educators in Western New York and Canada. I have served in the roles of Board Member and worked my way up through the roles to President. I am honored to currently be serving as a board member and Website editor with Kristin Riley. I also contribute to our Tech Tool of the Month Blog.
Why do you enjoy being a member of the NFRC?
I enjoy participating with the NFRC in as many ways as I can. I am a Past President, Board Member, and Co-Editor of the NFRC website www.thenfrc.org
I assist with committee work, mentoring college students and new teachers into the organization and attending events, help with the professional book club, brunches, volunteer to present at professional development events, assist with the zoo book give-away, and take advantage of other opportunities the NFRC offers like applying for Mini-Grants to earn funds to enhance experiences in the classroom for my students.
Tell us some fun facts about yourself.
I love spending time with my family. I have 2 amazing children in grade 12 and grade 8. They keep me going and warm my heart every day. We have been touring colleges with my oldest child who is a senior this year. What an exciting experience and world of opportunities she has available to her. It makes me want to go back myself! I received the NFRC Service 2015 Service to Reading Award at the Spring Brunch, what an honor (see photo above)! I enjoy photography and learning about new technologies. I went to DC this past summer to participate in the Blackboard World Conference. I participated in a flipping workshop and met Jon Bergman and Aaron Sams. I won an autographed copy of their book, Flipping Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Classroom Everyday, which fits in well with my rather large collection of autographed children's and professional development books. I blog for the International Literacy Association (ILA). My guilty pleasure is stopping at Starbucks way too much;)
How many years have you been an NFRC Member?
I have been a proud member of the NFRC for 8 or 9 years now. Join us for some fun and share the love of reading!
