Meet Ms. Bonnie Welsted
Title: Elementary School Teacher
School: Pinehurst Elementary School,
Frontier Central School District
Why did you become a teacher?
I wish I could say that becoming a teacher was my childhood dream and that I started the profession when I was fresh out of college, but my story has a different twist. After all of my children were in school, I began working at a school as an aide in various capacities. I absolutely loved working with children, assisting teachers and being a part of the learning environment. Shortly after, teachers and principals encouraged me to go back to school for teaching. I made the plunge and had all of my children attend my college graduation. I began teaching soon after that and have been doing it ever since. Remember...it's never too late!
What is your favorite teaching moment?
Watching a child develop a spark and build the confidence and independence to become a successful reader, is a priceless gift that I cherish as a teacher.
What is your role with the NFRC?
I am a new board member this year. Prior to this I have attended nearly every conference. I have gained so much from this professional organization.
Why do you enjoy being a member of the NFRC?
Well, all of the members have something in common...a love of children and a love of learning. There is a great knowledge base in the organization and social networking is an added benefit. The conferences have provided with me invaluable and up to date professional development.
Share some fun facts with us!
First, I have five children, who I have had the pleasure of reading many books to throughout the years. I am so proud that they are all successful college graduates. Next, as a First Grade teacher, I am fortunate enough to read to my children each and every day, hopefully inspiring them to develop a love of reading. Best of all, I have a new granddaughter who I look forward to spend a lot of time reading books to, as well!
