Meet Ms. Kirsten Burke Kenny
Your Title/Position: Teacher
School: Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart
Grade Level(s): 9 (NYS Certified birth-12)
Favorite Teaching Moment: It’s hard to name one favorite moment. I think I have a favorite moment every day. A moment when a student has a breakthrough in his/her understanding of the curriculum, to seeing students truly engrossed in a task, to when a student I do not expect to raise their hand does so with confidence, when someone leaves an anonymous positive affirmation on my board, etc. All those “little” moments add up to the momentum that keeps me excited to get to school every day.
Why you became a teacher: I feel that I am a very social person. Working in a people-rich environment where positive collaboration and discoveries can happen any moment of any day is definitely for me. I’m a person that likes changing things up, and not letting things become routine or mundane. I also love working with young people. I think they have a lot of raw energy and insight to keep me grounded as a person. Lastly, I am absolutely one of those people that believes that if I can make a difference for someone, it has all been worth it.
Role with the NFRC: I have been a member for several years now, and recently became a member of the tech/website committee. I recently served on a committee to help plan the 2015 winter brunch, which was very fun and exciting!
Why I enjoy being a member of the NFRC: What a great group of professionals! At every workshop, brunch, or seminar I try to meet someone new and extend my local professional contacts. I always find positive, energetic professionals at all levels of literacy/education. I always leave each event feeling invigorated, refreshed, and ready to take my commitment to literacy in education to the next level!
Fun Facts: I am a single mother of two beautiful boys, and am currently serving as a 2014-2015 PBS Digital Innovator. I have a passion for new literacies (a.k.a. “ed tech”) and being inspired, which has led me to start www.edtechinspired.com.
Years as an NFRC Member: 4 years
