Local Outreach Programs:
Habitat for Humanity
The NFRC is proud to be a part of Habitat for Humanity Buffalo. Through this program, our organization presents local families with a basket of books at the dedication of their home built by Habitat for Humanity. This year, the NFRC is adding another piece to our support of home literacy: we are donating bookcases along with a basket of books appropriate for the children occupying each home. The NFRC is proud to collaborate with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Women and Children’s Hospital to encourage parents of newborns to read with their infants. Through this program, the NFRC provides new books and has parents or caregivers in the NICU unit voice record a favorite book. When a parent or caregiver is unable to be in attendance at the hospital and the infant is in distress, the nurses will be able to play back the recording, calming and soothing the baby. International Outreach Program:
Nicaragua Mission Project
The NFRC is proud to support the Cristo Rey School in Popoyoapa, Rivas Nicaragua. We will be collecting school supplies (new and used) and Spanish children's books at all NFRC events throughout this school year to continue our support of the Cristo Rey School. Community Outreach Program:
"Wild About Reading" Book Giveaway at the Buffalo Zoo
Each year, the NFRC sets up a display on the importance of reading, with activities for parents and children. We also give away hundreds of books to kids who visit our display. We feel it is important to get books into the hands of kids. Book ownership is a good predictor of school success. In the past we have held our display at various shopping malls and at the Buffalo Zoo. You never know where we'll be next but it's a lot of fun. Learn more about this outreach program HERE!
